Recent media coverage across Australia has highlighted alarming levels of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contaminants in our drinking water.
Often referred to as “forever chemicals,” PFAS are persistent in the environment and the human body, accumulating over time and posing significant health risks.
What Are PFAS (PFOS & PFOA)?
PFAS is an umbrella term for thousands of fluorinated compounds which are synthetic chemicals widely used in various household and industrial products due to their heat-resistant and non-stick properties.
Commonly found in items like Teflon (non-stick) cookware, stain-resistant furniture and carpets, firefighting foams (also known as aqueous film-forming foam [AFFF]), packaged food containers, makeup, personal care products and cleaning products.
Why Are PFAS Concerning?
Despite water treatment processes that eliminate harmful bacteria, PFAS remain a unique threat.
Classified as human carcinogens in 2023, PFAS can mimic fatty acids, disrupt hormones, and have been linked to serious health issues such as breast, thyroid, and prostate cancers, as well as impacts on fertility.
Are PFAS banned in Australia?
These ‘forever’ chemicals have been used for decades in consumer products and the Australian Government has only banned the import, use and manufacture of some of the more prominent types of PFAS (PFOS, PFOA and PFHxS) from 1 July 2025.
Australia’s phasing out of these PFOS, PFOA and PFHxS from 1 July 2025 follows:
- a major manufacturer (3M) abandoning PFOS over two decades ago (and phasing out the manufacturing of the balance of PFAS by the end of 2025);
- 171 other countries banning PFOS (through ratification of the 2009 amendment listing PFOS under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants);
- Queensland became the first State to introduce a ban on AFFF in 2016 (given the most dispersive form of PFAS contamination is through AFFF).
Highest Risk Areas
For most people living in PFAS affected areas, the highest risk of exposure is likely to be through the consumption of contaminated groundwater and food grown using contaminated groundwater and might be identifiable through the Australian Government website. https://www.pfas.gov.au/advice
If you are in any of the regions identified with potential PFAS issues in the drinking water, it is recommended you start filtering your water with a high-quality water filter (especially including activated carbon) or buy bottled water.
You can undertake water testing or call your local water supplier who are government-regulated regulated to test your local drinking water and report results.
Water Filters – now a must!
It is well recognised that chronic, low-level exposure to a wide range of toxins is an increasing problem worldwide in our water supply.
The inherent dangers due to the persistence use of man-made chemicals in the environment require the need to filter a wide range of possible contaminants from our drinking sources.
Specifically, extensive testing and research has been conducted around the world to identify removal PFAS from our drinking water with Activated Carbon considered as the most successful and most studied treatment for PFAS removal.
US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) researchers report that “Granulated Activated Carbon can be 100 per cent effective for a period of time”.
These Granulated Activated Carbons can be found high quality water filters.
Activated Carbon
Activated carbon is commonly used to adsorb natural organic compounds, taste and odour compounds, and synthetic organic chemicals in drinking water treatment systems.
Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) is considered the most effective adsorbent because it is a highly porous material and provides a large surface area to which contaminants may adsorb.
PFAS Removal
Granulated Activated Carbon has been shown to effectively remove PFAS from drinking water when incorporating these factors:
- Gravity flow through filter mode with a pre-filter that prevents larger organic matter/rust etc particles filling the adsorbing media.
- High-quality activated carbon
- Depth of the bed of carbon in the filter
- Flow rate of the water
All these factors influence the time the water gets to spend with the adsorbing media.
Why we love and recommend – The zazen Alkaline Water System
The zazen Alkaline Water System is dedicated to providing clean, safe drinking water that is rebalanced for optimum hydration and tastes great.
Comprehensive Filtration: Their advanced 10-stage filtration system, including a Ceramic pre-filter (down to 0.2 microns), high-quality activated carbon Granulated Activated Carbon, is proven to filter and reduce PFAS (PFOS & PSOA) and other harmful substances from our drinking water. PFAS are generally considered to be between 0.3 – 1 microns in size.
Quality Assurance – The zazen multi-stage filter system also incorporates NSF-certified hospital-grade double-depth Granulated Activated Carbon and a slow gravity flow design, that ensures optimal filtration and contact time with contaminants.
Proven Effectiveness – Testing performed on Brisbane Tap Water by SAS Laboratories (Independent government certified) for zazen Water: <0.005ug/L per litre (ug/L is 1 billion micrograms per litre).
Summary
The presence of PFAS contaminants in our drinking water poses a serious health risk that cannot be ignored.
These “forever chemicals” accumulate in our bodies over time, leading to severe health issues, including cancers and hormonal disruptions.
Protect your family’s health by investing in a water filter treatment system.
Our recommendation is the zazen Alkaline Water System with its 10-stage filtration process, quality assurance, and proven effectiveness that reduces PFAS and other harmful substances, ensuring your water is clean, safe, and optimally balanced for hydration.
